Experiences Are More Valuable Than Things

Some people are born with a desire to travel and explore.

And some of us prefer to be homebodies.

For those of us who find just a bit too much comfort in our familiar surroundings, here are a few positive aspects of getting out into the world.

First and foremost, there is an abundance of beauty that can be found in this world.

And it’s not just reserved for the rich or well-connected.

It’s easy to capture images that can be enjoyed and shared with family for years to come.

Second, the people we meet while traveling tend to be free of the sense of anger, resentment or envy that dominates so much of our news cycle.

Prejudices and stereotypes are difficult to maintain after meeting and conversing with people from different backgrounds and cultures.

Mark Twain put it like this:

Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”

Of course, this doesn’t mean that travel is without risk.

Twain also noted that:

There ain't no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.”

Having said that, a person who is willing to put up with the discomfort and stress of traveling will find that experiences are far more valuable than things.

Stepping into new surroundings can remind us that there’s a lot of beauty and happiness in the world that we forget to notice.
