Our Daily Dread

Most of us have heard the phrase, “You are what you eat.”

But we rarely acknowledge that this principle also applies to what we feed our minds.

Whether we are snacking or feasting, news stories that hyper-focus on atrocity and outrage constitute a kind of daily dread supplement.

What’s fascinating is that many people recognize this truth, yet they continue to return to the trough, so to speak, over and over in a quest to be better informed.

The more horrific content we consume, the harder it is to recognize the good and beautiful things that still exist all around us.

Why do we consider those who are deeply jaded to be the sages of our time?

So many people seem to live their lives for the purpose of convincing us that it’s impossible to live in the “real world” without rejecting what is good, humble or innocent.

Even worse, we may be tempted to embrace our darker impulses that persuade us to abandon our moral foundations in order to fight fire with fire.

Yes, there are individuals who may rightly be classified by their actions as indecent people.

They represent a tiny portion of the overall population whose actions demonstrate that they are, by and large, good and decent individuals.

Why is it considered naive to acknowledge this reality?

The world may be broken in more ways than we can count but that doesn’t mean we must conform to that state in order to stand for something.
