The View from 30,000 Feet

Keeping troubles in perspective requires zooming out for the big picture

When we hear someone talk about pulling back to get the view from 30,000 feet, it’s a call to keep things in perspective by focusing on the big picture.

This is an especially important skill when dealing with some of the tests, trials and disappointments that life throws our way.

No matter how carefully we plan or live our lives, difficulty will find us from time to time.

When an unexpected challenge arises, it’s easy to become hyper-focused on that challenge.

In fact, when we start giving our undivided attention to our troubles, they seem to multiply and quickly become overwhelming.

The way to break that sense of doom is to zoom out and to force ourselves to examine the bigger picture.

The things that are challenging us will still be there but so will all the things in our life that are good and uplifting.

In other words, we can simultaneously experience things which are sad, disappointing and painful yet recognize that there is still much for which we can be grateful.

Zooming out to get the larger perspective can help us see how our failures and trials help us to more fully appreciate those things that go right as well as our triumphs.

The 30,000 foot view helps us break the tunnel vision of those discouraging details and more accurately assess the good and bad of our situation.

We may find that we have far more things for which we’re grateful than the passing things that test us.
