Most of us would agree that happiness is a good thing.
But when it comes to explaining how we attain our happiness, suddenly it’s not so simple.
How often does our happiness rest on things that are outside of ourselves?
Anytime we find ourselves pondering how much happier we’ll be when we are making more money, living in a better home or in a better relationship, we’re missing an important truth.
True happiness is not found in whatever material things we have, it’s more about who we are when we are all alone.
A person who is has inner peace and harmony with himself or herself will have a far greater likelihood of being happy regardless of what’s going on around them.
This doesn’t mean that we will never face seasons of disappointment or hardship.
It means that how we see ourselves is more important to our happiness than whatever conditions we’re currently experiencing.
Our outside circumstances are constantly changing.
We can’t count on them to be a consistent source of happiness.
When we focus on cultivating our inner happiness, we learn resiliency and how to live in the present moment rather than waiting until we’ve reached a particular destination to be happy.
Happiness is more about enjoying the climb to the top of the mountain than it is about reaching the summit.
Reaching a goal can be immensely satisfying but we shouldn’t forget to appreciate the sights along the way.
