Who is more qualified to make decisions about your life, you or some expert?
It’s surprising how many people will pause before answering a question like this because they’ve been conditioned to believe that experts know things the rest of us cannot.
They forget that experts are human, like the rest of us, and can still get things wrong.
This isn’t to imply that seeking expert advice is a bad thing.
Those who have expertise in a particular area may be able to help us get a more complete picture of a complex subject.
The problem is that too many people become willing to either blindly follow or to let experts make crucial choices for them.
No single expert has enough knowledge to make decisions for everyone else.
They can offer suggestions or recommendations consistent with what they know but they cannot tell us what’s in our best interest.
Expert advice, combined with authority or arrogance can also become a source of domination or misinformation, if we’re not careful.
Just because someone has an advanced degree doesn’t mean that we have a duty to respect their opinion on all things.
Each of us has a mind of our own and we must use it to learn what we can to make the choices that best meet our needs.
Over time, we can learn to think like an expert while also being mindful to remain humble enough to acknowledge that we don’t have all the answers.
